6:02 pm - THE HARNESS of THE LORD

snofox
Something to think on and make of it what you will. I thought I'd share as it means a lot to me right now, as someone who is overweight and has the freedom to eat whatever they want... but is realising what looks like freedom is really such a bondage. God's ways are not our ways and who can grasp how it works... but we know it works. I hope this blesses someone else right now where they're at.

Here's a deep one for you, since no one posts here any moreCollapse )

11:18 pm - Going to "church"

tibbycat
Hello LJ OzChristians!

I thought I'd post in this community in an attempt to wake it up. It would be nice if we had an active community on LJ for Christians in Australia where we could encourage each other and talk about our faith.

So I'll start by asking a question about church. I heard it said that "the Bible says absolutely nothing about what we in the 21st century call 'church'" and that "hanging out with other christians is church".

Do you agree with this? Is just hanging out with other Christians, "church"? Do we as Christians have to go to an institutional church (i.e. Anglican, Baptist, Presbyterian, Uniting Church, etc etc) every Sunday (and sing a bunch of contemporary Christian music songs) in order to be going to "church"? What does the Bible say about this?

I'd love to hear what you think on this.

7:18 pm - christians in the world

jungle_dread
Hey all,

So does anyone here go to secular music festivals?
I was at Splendour In The Grass and was wishing there was a way to know who else was a christian there.
It'd be good if we had a modern secretive way to recognise christians in the world.
Like how the fish used to be .

9:19 pm - Easter

danny_geebus
Heya Guys! Haven't posted in a while, but it's Easter tomorrow, and I want to wish you all a safe and happy holiday. It's hard after 2000 odd years to bring the relevance of Jesus having died for us, and I even heard to my dismay, someone say "do you still believe?". I don't know about you, but when I try to wrap my head around the fact that he was rejected by all, he was almost totally alone when he died, and yet still he forgave us. still he loved us. And so in his spirit, I want you all to remember that your sins are forgiven, if you have done wrong by somebody: you are forgiven. if you have done something in the past that you feel terrible about, and don't feel worthy: you are forgiven. Remember this gift he gave us and have a wonderful easter, I love you all

1:17 pm - Saved!?

tibbycat
Quick question: what does everyone think about the movie "Saved!"? I saw it last night with some friends who love it. I have to say that it made me sad more than anything else. The only characters in it who were actually loving it seemed were the non-Christian characters and the supposed Christian characters were a bunch of hypocrites. I realise it's meant to be a satire of hypocritical Christians, but I couldn't help but wish for the sake of balance that there was at least one Christian character in it who didn't just play lip service to Jesus' words.

I think my friends watching it with me (who are Christians themselves) took my criticism of the film to be judgmental towards the characters. So the character of Mary in the film tries to make her boyfriend not gay by having sex with him. It doesn't work, she gets pregnant, and so she blames God. I wondered how someone who's supposedly been a Christian all her life could or would make such a mistake and then blame God for her stupid mistake? I realise all sin is wicked, but if I was a serial killer who went around killing people and raping people for fun, but said I believed that I was a Christian because Jesus loves me, would you really believe that I was a Christian? I'm not suggesting at all that salvation is based in any measure upon our works, but if we're meant to be the "salt of the Earth", shouldn't that be reflected in the things that we do?

I found it implausible too that the character of Mary when seeing her boyfriend and his boyfriend at the prom would casually and nonchalantly say "oh, so is this your life partner?" about her boyfriend's boyfriend. This is a character who's supposed to have been raised in such a sheltered Christianesqe environment that she had to look up the word "gay" on the internet when he came out because she didn't know what that meant.

Anyway. Was interesting to have finally watched it, but I think I found it more depressing than uplifting.

1:50 pm - Defending the faith... online?

tibbycat
Oh dear, it seemed like a good idea at first. We're commanded to defend our faith right? So when I saw a thread about religion on an internet forum that I sometimes post to I thought I might as well say what I am and explain why I became a Christian.

I'm not sure it was a good idea in retrospect.
I'd think with time I'd learn to avoid debates on internet forums, especially debates about religion. They have a way of turning ugly fast.

Have a look: http://www.aussie-nintendo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6827

(I don't expect you to read all 47 pages, just maybe look at the last few [my name is Mark btw if you don't already know[)

I'm not sure I was wise, but, what's done is done I figure. On the bright side, I did have some Christians message me privately to say they were encouraged by what I posted, so *shrugs* go figure.

thoughts?

9:04 pm - Church finding help

nerdi
Hiya,

I need help. I live in the inner-west Sydney and I haven't yet found a church to call home.

I'm used to Sunday evening services aimed at young adults and mostly attended by... young adults. At the moment all I can find nearby is services aimed at the 30+ age groups (more like 40+ most of the time), married couples and families.

Does anyone know anything nearby I could go to? I'm hoping to steer clear of Hillsong.

Thanx :)

hello... :)

keeping up physical health is important, right?  so i'm contemplating going a gym.  i'm 28 and not motivated at all to work out.  i used to love martial arts and that kept me really fit but i don't want to go back to training for the point of more belts...  i don't know why i'm making a spiritual issue out of this.  actually, no, i do, it's the money.  i know i need to look after my body but i have it in my head that it's something i should be doing without paying for it...

hmmm...  at least that was coherant. :)  any ideas or thoughts?

5:34 pm - The New Year

danny_geebus
Hello all! Happy new year, I wish you all the best! It's been a long time since I've posted here, and thought i'd get a bit of a discussion going. Tell me, how do you guys feel about the rise of atheism of late? and how do you deal with atheists?
I personally respect a person and their beliefs, and nor would I try to force my beliefs on them, but it seems that most self proclaimed atheists I've met seem to want to argue that my beliefs are wrong, and convince me of that. So I'd like to hear your thoughts on these things...

10:08 am - Christian Videogame

jungle_dread
Yes, this is no joke, there's a new "christian" videogame titled "Left Behind: Eternal Forces"
Players can command the army of good - the Tribulation Force - against the anti-Christ's Global Community

Here's a link to a news article regarding it
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/6178055.stm

Interesting read, and you can view an excerpt of the game via the link

Thoughts?

4:49 pm - Prayer Requests

forgivenson
So, I just have a quick small favour to ask of you all.

Could I ask for some prayer, please? There are a few things that I want to ask for some prayerful support in at the moment.

The first is this job that I had the interview for on Friday at 7LA (Radio station in Launceston). I'm really excited about the opportunity, and I'd really love to get this job. Of course, if it's God's place for me not to get this, then so be it; but yeah, I really would like it, and so if you could pray that this would happen, that'd be awesome.

Secondly is with my music. I'm starting to feel like there's something missing in my heart over the past day or two. I've had a few good starts with songs, but I can't seem to make anything solid. I know that two days doesn't seem like a very long time to be worried about, but still, the second request is for inspiration, and some God-given power to get some more songs down.

Oops, there's a third, too.

Third: I forgot about this (Strangely enough :P) For my back. I spent Sunday night in the Emergency Room with back pain, and it's still really sore. Not so bad that I can't move or anything, but it's quite painful at times. God's healing over my back would be awesome, too.

Finally, for a wonderful young singer that I've had the privilege to meet over on MySpace: Jennifer Shaw's father died the other day. Prayer and comfort for her and her family would be awesome.

Thank you, guys. I love you.

God bless,
~J

As some of you may or may not know, I create and sell fake dreadlocks through my website www.jungledread.com

I've been making them for the past 6-7 years, and last year I decided to vend at the fairly popular non-christian music festival "Splendour in the Grass" in Byron Bay
It was an amazing experience :)
Lots of people came and wanted their hair done, and it felt like I had the chance to have a good chat with so many people that I wouldn't necessarily have had the chance to talk with.

Looking back on the experince, I've realised that doing other people's hair might just be a great way to "evangelise" in a non threatening way. I mean, everybody talks freely with the hairdresser about all kids of things. It's like a cheap form of therapy for some people ;)
Also, people do enjoy the experience of having their hair done.

As a hairdresser it gives a christian a good opportunity to, well, BE a christian.
you get to;
-serve another person (atkin to washing feet no?)
-meet non-christians
-be a good listener
-take time to have a good long conversation with a stranger

Anyway, to the point of my post, I was considering gathering a few other strong, committed, (yet streetwise + loving) christians to work with me at different festivals.

So what do you all think?
Any questions regarding the festival, any tips, hints, thoughts, rebuking, are all welcome!

10:55 pm - What Does Being Moral Mean To You?

nicholas8976
How do you go about making moral choices in your everyday life? Is this something you have written about in your blog?

If so, I would love to have a read as part of my PhD research in Sociology.

*this has been cross-posted, so apologies if you've come across this before
